Round 1:
8th Degree Black started as a creative Mixed Martial Arts lifestyle
brand. We had a pretty cool concept. We wanted to capture the
essence of MMA by illustrating its origins. Our designs were inspired
by the three subcultures that make up the history of today's MMA...
Greek Pankration, Brazilian Vale Tudo and Japanese Shooto.
Round 2:
We started out by selling our t-shirts online. Then we started going to
local MMA events and even set up a kiosk at our local mall. Things
went ok for a while. But one thing we noticed was that people liked to
suggest their own ideas for new t-shirt designs. People would say,
"The guys at my gym would love a red judo t-shirt" or "Can you do a
muay thai design on black?"
Round 3:
Needless to say, it would have been expensive to build inventory for
all the ideas people were coming up with. So we basically started
asking around if MMA gyms or fight teams would want to buy a few
dozen t-shirts and we would create their own custom design, source
the blank garment and get it printed for them. Well, we quickly learned
that there is a pretty good market for custom t-shirts, so that’s the
direction we went in. Now we do custom designs for various clients
and brands, including bands and pro athletes.
